Amy Nadel

Meet the Instructor -

Amy has been teaching privately and in public school settings for more than 20 years.

Amy is from New York City, where her grandparents landed after leaving Odessa, Ukraine. In Odessa it was said that "if you didn't carry a violin it was because you were a pianist." So, Amy decided on the piano. When she was very young, the New York Philharmonic used to play concerts at night in different parks across the five boroughs of the city.  She remembers lying in the grass and listening to the orchestra, whose sound mingled in the air with the fragrance of the summer flowers. She was hooked.

Concerts at the Philharmonic's hall and Carnegie Hall were Amy’s introduction to the world- they were filled with audience members from all over the world; and when the orchestra played Stravinsky's Petrouchka, it sparked visions of Russian peasants dancing, and a Bach Suite soared like the pictures she saw of great Baroque churches in Europe.

And then after a concert they’d head over to Ray's for pizza. Because that was sometimes the best part of it all. Still is, here in Boston.

When Amy is not in Boston, she is often in the mountains of northern New Mexico, hiking and the sound is mostly silence.

Amy enjoys practicing. The worst problem she has with it is that her 2 cats like to jump up on the bench and sometimes help her press the keys. She loves them most of the time- but not at the piano.

For Amy, the best part about teaching is seeing a student who has just told her "I can't do that." Then they practice "that" and voila! "I can do that." She thinks playing something at the appropriate level for the student is always possible.  Amy believes one of her central roles is to help her students learn how to practice that piece or bit, so that they can play it.
